Collaboration and co-operation: using the voices of colleagues in psychodrama research

Abstract

This article, for the Zeitschrift für Psychodrama und Soziometrie, focuses on a study that used collaborative qualitative research methodology; namely the Co-operative Inquiry Cycle (1988). Co-operative Inquiry Cycle (CI) aimed to identify the ways in which psychodramatists worked with people who were survivors of sexual abuse and how they ensured that the protagonist experience was healing rather than harmful and re-traumatising. This study comprised of four senior psychodrama trainers/practitioners, who acted as co-researchers and co-subjects for two cycles. The texts were collected through semi-structured interview, audio-taped and transcribed; once analysed any questions unanswered or issues that were unclear formed the basis of the second cycle of inquiry. Analysing qualitative text presents challenges to new practitioner researchers, so there is an emphasis on how to do this, using material from the study and how to present the results in coherent ways.

Zusammenfassung

Dieser Artikel für die Zeitschrift für Psychodrama und Soziometrie konzentriert sich auf eine Studie, die kollaborative qualitative Forschungsmethoden verwendet, nämlich den Co-operative Inquiry Cycle (1988). Dieser zielt darauf ab, herauszufinden, wie PsychodramatikerInnen mit Menschen zusammenarbeiteten, die sexuellen Missbrauch überlebt hatten, und wie sie sicherstellten, dass die Erfahrung der ProtagonistInnen eher heilt als schädlich und re-traumatisierend wirkt. Diese Studie bestand aus vier erfahrenen Psychodrama-TrainerInnen/PraktikerInnen, die zwei Zyklen lang als Co-ForscherInnen und Co-ProbandInnen fungierten. Die Texte wurden durch semi-strukturierte Interviews erhoben, aufgezeichnet und transkribiert. Nach der Analyse wurden alle unbeantworteten oder unklaren Fragen als Grundlage für den zweiten Untersuchungszyklus verwendet. Die Analyse von qualitativem Text stellt ungeübte ForscherInnen vor Herausforderungen. Daher liegt der Schwerpunkt darauf, das Vorgehen zu veranschaulichen, indem Material aus der Studie verwendet wird. Dabei werden die Ergebnisse auf kohärente Weise dargestellt.

  1. Moreno’s (1939) description of psychodramatic shock was related to working with patients with psychosis. When the lucid patient was stimulated in some way, this would act as a catalyst to ‘throw’ the patient “back into the psychotic world. This upsetting experience is called ‘psychodramatic shock’.” (p. 1).
