Abstract

The review essay sketches the international debate about current political developments in China and possible future trends towards democratisation, political crisis or “resilient authoritarianism”. With reference to recent publications, modifications of the Chinese political system are presented and the attitude of the Chinese population towards these changes is discussed. Local reforms, the emergence of an environmental movement and a proto-civil society illustrate the socio-political changes going on in today’s China.
