Effectiveness of soil shielding for seismic safety of buildings and structures

Analysis of published journal papers on the effectiveness of in-ground earthquake-protection shields have indicated that actual assessment of the effectiveness of shielding installations cannot be made on the basis of computational methods that do not account for the physical pattern of an earthquake tremor due to deep-seated transverse waves, since the computer parameters differ appreciably from the actual ones. Attention is turned to earthquake-protection installations that reduce the tangential bond between the bed and foundation slab, for example, by the placement of a sliding layer.
