X-ray phase analysis and light metallography are used to study pure zirconium surface layer structure after pulsed laser treatment. Afivefold increase in microhardness is established within surface layers of the laser action zone as a result of a high degree of structure dispersion and presence of a significant amount of martensitic phase.
