Functionalization of polyamide surface by radiation-induced grafting of N-vinyl-pyrrolidone and acrylamide

Abstract

Two methods were used in order to graft N-vinyl-pyrrolidone and acrylamide onto the polyamide surface in air atmosphere—simultaneous and pre-irradiation ones. The parameters for both procedures were optimized. The obtained data have revealed that under selected condition the desired product, of assumed degree of grafting, might be produced. Sorption capacity of the grafted layers was evaluated using 152Eu3+ as a marker monitoring depletion of the radioisotope from the initial solution by a gamma radiometer. It was confirmed that formation of europium complexes was followed by lowering solution acidity. It seems that application of the simultaneous (direct) method of grafting introduces to the grafted layers crosslinking or/and branching as well as degradation of functional groups. All these phenomena reduce access of Eu3+ to the studied sorbent therefore sorption capacity of the polyamide functionalized via pre-irradiation (indirect) method is higher than that determined for the sorbent prepared by simultaneous grafting.
