Despite being a fairly common species in the aquarium trade, its ecology is virtually unknown. A recent study in the Mogi Guaçu river (upper Paraná River basin) showed that Jewel tetra is a single spawner on the flooding season, with mean fecundity of 486 (±159) oocytes per female, and size at first sexual maturity of 2.0 cm (Gonçalves et al. 2013).
