Abstract
Even more than 160 years after the first casuistic and over 60 years after the first detailed description of the features of the syndrome, many aspects of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), which is still often referred to as Janz syndrome especially in German-speaking countries, are still unknown and are sometimes controversially discussed. This article gives an overview of the history of the syndrome and the change in nomenclature over the years as well as a brief outlook on the current developments including genetics, imaging, psychology, psychiatry and social aspects.
