Both pupils remain mitotic during apnea (The left-inferior image shows respiratory activity). At the end of apnea, the pupils become dilated, and the mydriasis continues during hyperpnea. At the end of hyperpnea, the pupillary constrictions occur again and the miosis is maintained during apnea. This periodic pupillary change occurs repeatedly with a cycle of 1 min and 30 s.
