Ergebnisse einer Umfrage zur Ausbildungssituation im Fach Augenheilkunde in Österreich

Zusammenfassung

Hintergrund

Ziel war es, die subjektive Zufriedenheit sowie die derzeitigen Standards in der Ausbildung im Fach der Augenheilkunde und Optometrie in Österreich erstmalig zu erheben und Verbesserungsmöglichkeiten aufzuzeigen.

Material und Methode

Es wurde ein Fragebogen (33 Fragen insgesamt) zu 5 Themenkomplexen entworfen, dieser wurde im Januar 2018 an alle österreichischen Assistenzärzte im Fach Augenheilkunde und Optometrie verschickt und stand bis inklusive März 2018 zur Verfügung.

Resultate

Es nahmen 92 Ärzte aus 8 österreichischen Bundesländern, die zum Zeitpunkt der Umfrage in Ausbildung waren, an der Umfrage teil (Rücklaufquote von 58 %); 63 % der Teilnehmer bewerteten die Qualität ihrer Ausbildung mit sehr gut oder gut im bekannten Schulnotensystem. Jedoch bewerten 64 % der Teilnehmer das Verhältnis zwischen Ausbildung und Routinetätigkeiten negativ. Rotationen sind durch die jeweilige Abteilungsgröße beschränkt, und 71 % können sich eine externe Rotation gut oder sehr gut vorstellen. Die Umfrage zeigte zudem den klaren Wunsch, eine chirurgische Ausbildung, v. a. in der Kataraktchirurgie, zu erhalten.

Schlussfolgerung

Die Ausbildungsstruktur erscheint landesweit sehr heterogen, die Grundzufriedenheit der Teilnehmer mit ihrer Ausbildung ist jedoch hoch. Verbesserungsmöglichkeiten bestehen beim Ermöglichen von Rotationen, in der chirurgischen Ausbildung sowie im Verhältnis zwischen Routine und Lehre.

Summary

Background

Prior to this study initiated by the Austrian Young Ophthalmologists, information regarding the job satisfaction of resident ophthalmologists did not exist in Austria. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to collect this information, to investigate the current standards of clinical training in ophthalmology and to suggest possibilities for improvement.

Material and methods

The committee of the Austrian Young Ophthalmologists formulated 33 questions relating to 1 of 5 thematic complexes. The questionaire was sent to all Austrian residents in ophthalmology and optometry in January 2018 and participation was possible until the end of March 2018.

Results

A total of 92 ophthalmology residents from 8 federal states participated in the survey, which constituted a response rate of 58% considering a total of 160 residents at the time. Of the participants 63% graded the quality of their residency with 1 or 2 using the Austrian school grading scale of 1–5 (1—very good, 5—insufficient); however, 64% graded the proportion of teaching and routine activities with 4 or worse using a more refined grading scale of 1–7 (1—unsatisfactory, 7—very satisfactory). Rotations to 7 or more specialized ophthalmology outpatient clinics were done by only 17% of the survey participants and 71% affirmed an interest in participating in rotations to other hospitals in order to round off their clinical expertise. In addition, the survey showed that the vast majority wanted to receive training in surgery, particularly in cataract surgery.

Conclusion

The nationwide structure of clinical training appears to be very heterogeneous but the general job satisfaction of the study participants was high. The possibility to do rotations, the access to surgical training and the proportion of teaching and routine activities constitute room for improvement.
