Ist eine Eradikation der Poliomyelitis möglich?

Bereits 1988 formulierte die Weltgesundheitsorganisation das ambitionierte Ziel, die Kinderlähmung weltweit bis zum Jahr 2000 zu eliminieren. Trotz zahlreicher Rückschläge wurden 2009 ein neuer Strategieplan ausgearbeitet.

Da der Mensch der einzige Wirt ist, könnte Poliomyelitis theoretisch ausgerottet werden. Bisher wurden bereits große Erfolge erzielt, neue Ausbrüche aufgrund von Kriegen oder Krisenherden und auch fehlende finanzielle Mittel verhinderten jedoch die tatsächliche Eradikation.
