Standard values—How do I measure the tibial slope correctly?

Abstract

The functional interaction of bony and ligamentous structures is of outstanding importance for physiological knee joint kinematics. Despite all the technical advances and scientific efforts, there is considerable controversy in the recent literature regarding the importance of the bony anatomy of the proximal tibia and in particular its dorsal inclination (tibial slope); however, general consensus has been reached that a valid and reproducible methodology for the assessment of the tibial slope is required. It must be borne in mind that each assessment is only a two-dimensional approximation of the complex three-dimensional tibial plateau, particularly when using native X‑ray images and that possible differences between the medial and lateral tibial compartments are insufficiently accounted for. This article gives an overview of the numerous modalities and techniques for radiological assessment of the tibial slope and its distribution among the general population.
