Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund
Abstract
Background
Postpartum bleeding is one of the major causes of maternal mortality. More effective hemostasis measures can help reduce hysterectomy rates and mortality.
Objectives
To describe the use of gauze covered with chitosan, a potent haemostatic agent derived from chitin, in the treatment of postpartum haemorrhage.
Methods
Review of the current literature, analysis of noteworthy cases from the press, discussion of basic research and expert recommendations.
Results
Chitosan-covered gauze is easy to use and requires no special training. It can be used after both vaginal and cesarean deliveries, and there are no adverse side effects. It is very inexpensive compared with other treatment options.
Conclusion
The use of chitosan-covered gauze is a new, cost-saving and effective treatment option for postpartum haemorrhage.
