Howard Schuman (left) is associate professor of sociology and director of the Detroit Area Study at the University of Michigan. His research interests are ethnic and race relations in Detroit and survey methods. He has recently completed a report on economic development in Pakistan for the Harvard Center for International Affairs.

Edward O. Laumann is co-investigator on the Detroit Area Study and an assistant professor of sociology at Michigan. He is the author ofPrestige and Association in an Urban Community (1966). His Detroit work involves a study of values, attitudes, associations, and life-styles of the white urban community.
