Epidermal chalone and cell proliferation in a transplantable squamous cell carcinoma in hamsters

Summary

Water extracts of a transplantable hamster epidermal tumour (squamous cell carcinoma) depressed the mitotic rate of mouse epidermis cultured in a simple medium with colcemid. The discriminative test for the epidermal chalone and the lack of effect on the mitotic rate of the sebaceous glands strongly indicated that the mitosis inhibitor extracted from the tumour was biologically identical to the normal epidermal chalone. The mitotic rate in small pieces of the tumour cultured in the same medium was not significantly influenced by the addition of adrenalin and hydrocortisone, or of the epidermal chalone to the culture medium. The lack of effect is discussed in relation to the histological differentiation of the tumour tissue and the culture technique.
