Summary
A comparison is made between the experimental results obtained examining 3 Ilford plates sent at 17 km a.s.l. in the atmosphere with flying balloons, and 2 similar plates exposed for 43 days at 3500 m a.s.l. (Laboratorio Testa Grigia).
Assuming an exponential absorption of the radiation responsible for the observed phenomena, the deduced mean free path is λ=141±12 g/cm2.
Using the Gross transformation, we got λ=176±14 g/cm2.
In both cases the error, calculated taking into account the statistical fluctuations only, is likely lower than the real one. However, a good value for the mean free path seems to stay between 130 and 180 g/cm2.
A discussion is made comparing our results with those deduced from other Authors' works by the same or by different techniques.
