Magnetization reversal in single ferromagnetic Ni and Co particles

Abstract

Presented are magnetization measurements of single submicronic particles (500–50 nm) at very low temperature (0.1–6 K). We are studying the mean switching field and the switching probability as a function of the field sweeping rate and temperature. For temperatures down to 1 K we observe an increase of the mean switching field. Below, the mean switching field becomes temperature independent. The results are compared with models of thermally activated switching and macroscopic quantum tunneling.
