Summary
A dynamic testing system with multiple configurations is described and results for dynamic buckling are presented. The dynamic test stand of the Laboratoire de Mécanique des Solides de l'École Polytechnique includes a firing device, units for measurements of force and velocity, and automatic data acquisition employing a mini-computer.
The firing device consists of an air-compressed impeller capable of projecting a variety of projectile shapes and providing for a wide variety of test configurations (dynamic tension and compression, perforation of armoured plate, similitude tests, dynamic buckling, etc.). The force is equivalent to that of a 5 kg projectile fired at 30 m/s.
In addition to a piezoelectric quartz sensor for measurement of force, there is a Hopkinson bar for measurement of stresses up to 7,000 N with rise times of about 30.10−6 seconds.
The main component of the data acquisition system is a digital recorder for transient effects whose time definition is 1/2,000th of the total recording time (10−8 seconds optimal). The recorder is connected to a mini-computer which also performs subsequent data analysis.
The equipment enabled the École Polytechnique research team to undertake experimental study of dynamic buckling under step rate loading, thereby confirming the theoretical approach in [2], the fundamental results of which are recapitulated here.
Three tests illustrate the work achieved to study the influence of initial geometrical imperfection and the behaviour of a beam under step rate loading. Good correlation is found between the test results and model prediction.
