Satellite lines in rare earth double nitrate spectra

III. Complementary solid solutions: Pr(Mg)Zn-nitrate

  • Published:
Physik der kondensierten Materie

Abstract

Satellite lines were observed in the absorption spectrum of the solid solution Pr2Mg3cZn3(1-c)(NO3)12·24H2O (c≈0,01) and compared with the satellite lines in the spectrum of the complementary solid solution Pr2Zn3c Mg3(1-c )(NO3)12·24H2O. Matrix elements of the crystal field perturbation energy were determined. This additional energy, due to substitution of foreign ions on lattice sites, has nearly the same magnitude but opposite sign in the two complementary systems.
