Summary

A stable enrichment of bacteria capable of metabolizing lactate under methanogenic conditions was obtained from rumen contents. The methanogenic strains associated with lactate utilizers were identified asMethanosarcina sp. andMethanobacterium sp. The role of propionate as indicator of failure in the methanogenic phase is shown.
