Polarisation analysis of neutron scattering from crystal field levels

Abstract

We argue that polarisation analysis of scattering of an unpolarised beam from a single crystal is a useful technique for looking at crystal field excitations. A general expression for the polarisation in the scattered beam is presented and two illustrative examples worked out.
