Summary

Ethidium Bromide (EB) inactivates the vaccinia virus at 37°C. It almost completely inhibits the formation of virions when applied at the 3rd or the 6th hour following infection of baboon kidney cells by this virus. Viral development is partially inhibited when EB is applied after the 12th hour and not affected after the 18th hour. Pre-treatment of the cells within the 24 hours previous to infection lowers the yield of virions. The complexation by EB of cellular and viral DNA could be the cause of the inhibitory action of this product.
