Die Chloroplasten in TMV-infizierten Zellen des frühen Folgeblattbereichs werden licht- und elektronenmikroskopisch im Vergleich mit gesunden Kontrollpflanzen untersucht. Es gibt keinen eindeutigen Hinweis für eine Virusproduktion in oder in unmittelbarer Beziehung zu den Chloroplasten; vielmehr sprechen alle Untersuchungsergebnisse für eine von den Chloroplasten unabhängige Virusproduktion, die allerdings die Chloroplasten sekundär beeinträchtigen kann.

Das Cytoplasma in virusinfizierten Zellen des frühen Folgeblattbereichs wird licht- und elektronenmikroskopisch im Vergleich mit gesunden Kontrollpflanzen untersucht. Alle sublichtmikroskopischen Formen des TMV, soweit sie im Elektronenmikroskop sichtbar gemacht werden konnten, treten im Cytoplasma auf. Die charakteristische Partikellänge von 300 mμ ist sowohl in den hexagonalen Prismen als auch in sublichtmikroskopischer Form primär in der Zelle gegeben.
