Summary
The absorption spectrum of colorless benitoite crystals shows a broad distinctly pleochroitic absorption band at 3.3 μ (3030 cm−1). Maximal absorption occurs when the electric vector of the polarized light vibrates parallel to [00.1]. The wave length of the absorption band and its disappearance upon heating the crystal to 400°C suggest that this band is due to the OH-stretching vibration. The observations are interpreted assuming that the structure contains H2O molecules.
