Summary

Between 1983 and 1989, 72 patients with breast asymmetry were operated on; the average age at surgery was 24.7 years. The classification of Elsahay and Bohmert was used for preoperative planning. 37 patients presented a relative macromasty, 11 a relative micromasty, 10 a relative macro/micromasty. An asymmetrical macromasty was corrected in 10 and an asymmetrical micromasty in 4 patients. 56 patients were reviewed at a mean of 1.6 years after surgery. A unit system was developed in order to objectively measure the postoperative symmetry. The end result was graded on a 4-point scale. Excellent and good results were noted in 65.6% of the patients, while 34.4% were classified as fair or poor. 85% of the patients were satisfied with the operation.
