Synopsis
Results of a laboratory experiment indicate that alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) can feed in the dark onDaphnia and that this feeding is not size selective. It is presumed that the fish filter feed. Observations on small alewives (ca 50 to 70 mm) confirm that they will filter feed in Lake Michigan and filtering activity increases as it gets dark.
