Summary
-
1.
The action potentials of primary and secondary muscle spindle afferents from the gastrocnemius muscle of the cat were recorded from small dorsal root filaments. The length of the gastrocnemius muscle was sinusoidally varied (1, 2.5 and 10 cycles per sec). The dependence of the response on the static component of the stimulus (D o ) above the threshold (D s ) on which the sinusoidal stimulus was superimposed was determined.
-
2.
The average impulse frequency (R) is dependent on the muslce length:R=k D o +c [Impulses × sec−1]. With additional sinusoidal stimulation the equationR=k * D o +c+c d [Impulses × sec−1] was valid. Not only the additive constantc d but also the multiplicate constantk * depended on the frequency of the sinusoidal stimuli and on the degree of modulation. This is believed to be a further indication of non-linear properties of the investigated system.
