Abstract

Polymeric sulfur nitride was the first substance of the class of quasi-one-dimensional metals which did not become insulating at low temperatures. It does not only retain its metallic transport properties but even becomes superconducting. The preparation and crystal structure is described and a review is given of the physical investigations of this material. Particular emphasis will lie on the influence of the real structure of the crystals on the physical properties and on their anisotropy. This discussion makes comprehensible why the attribute “one-dimensional” should be used with caution for this particular material.
