Abstract
Establishment of the physics of the volume phase transition of gels requires independent information about the collective diffusion constant of gel, the elastic property of gel, and the friction between the polymer network of gel and the fluid. Such information has been obtained using the dynamic light scattering and the rheological techniques so far. The behavior of frictional properties of polymer networks of gels are revealed recently, due to the development of a newly designed apparatus for the measurement of the friction coefficient of gel. The present article reviews recent studies on the frictional properties of gels. The difficulties of the friction measurement and the way they are solved will also be described in detail.
