Problems in Accepting the Diagnosis: “Psychological Factors Affecting Physical Condition”

Abstract

Psychiatric residency training directors were surveyed. They estimated that the new diagnosis would be used less frequently than “psychophysiologic disorders,” that it would not be more accepted by nonpsychiatric physicians, and they disagreed among themselves about inclusion and exclusion criteria. A survey of hospital records revealed no use of the new diagnosis and continued rare use of the old. Possible reasons for problems in accepting the new diagnosis are suggested, and the importance of using it is stressed.
