Abstract

This article describes the establishment of a core list of clinical competencies expected of all residents by the end of their training at the University of Illinois Department of Psychiatry. These competencies currently serve as a basis for ongoing curricular revisions and for developing comprehensive methods to evaluate resident performance. Two major considerations guided the work. First, the list was to specify what the residents will be expected to do “in the field” rather than the knowledge, skills and attitudes considered necessary for learning these competencies. Second, while focusing on observable behaviors the list was to include and highlight competencies in the area of interpretation and empathy which cut across all patient related activities.
