Abstract
The advent and integration of multicultural considerations in education is reviewed and appraised, with problems outlined relative to needs, trends, and implementation. Emphasis is placed on the potential leadership position available to psychology in developing and instituting academic programs and experiences that deal with the multiculturalism in our society and support the educational mission. While a brief review of multicultural concerns in education is provided, of primary importance is the need of schools and academic programs to incorporate appropriate considerations in curricula, supported by the expertise psychology could offer to multicultural education for teachers. The purpose of this paper is to provide positional insight relative to potential roles in multicultural education and to stimulate responsive thought and action in this direction. Emphasis is placed on consideration of the philosophy, viability, and integration of a proposed multicultural content model.
