Abstract

The authors have developed the submerged arc welding method in a vertical upward (PF) position which is a highly efficient method for welding vertical joints in the 9 %Ni steel inner vessel of the PC LNG storage tank. The conventional submerged arc welding is limited to flat (PA) and horizontal (PC) positions because flux is used. By developing a new welding device and welding material, this unique method has been established and stability and quality have been proven. Compared to manual metal arc welding that is mainly used for vertical joints in LNG tanks outside Japan, the mechanical properties are equivalent and efficiency is higher.
