  1. The compound N2H2 has been called many things over the years, including diimide, diimine, dimid, diamin, diazen and diazene. The name diazene has been promoted in recent years in an attempt to systematize the nomenclature of the nitrogen hydrides, and has been adopted by Chemical Abstracts. There is an unfortunate aural confusion with diazine, a long established common name for diazabenzenes, and it is questionable whether the simple hydrides of nitrogen warrant such systematization; N2, NH3 and N2H4 are most unlikely to become known as diazyne, azane and diazane. We prefer the traditional name, diimide, which is unambiguous and long-established.
