Abstract
Experimenteel psychologen gebruiken van oudsher speciaal geconstrueerde taken waarbij proefpersonen volgens instructie reageren (de respons) op bepaalde gebeurtenissen in de omgeving (de stimulus). De reactietijden (rt's) die op deze manier worden verzameld geven informatie over de architectuur en dynamiek van de mentale processen die samenhangen met het uitvoeren van de taak. Naast het uitvoeren van een actie is het vermogen om een actie snel te kunnen stoppen (inhibitoire controle) echter minstens zo belangrijk voor doelgericht gedrag. Dit artikel geeft een beschrijving van het onderzoek naar ons vermogen om snel aan de noodrem te kunnen trekken als dat nodig is.
