Abstract
Patiënten met persoonlijkheidsstoornissen staan sinds jaar en dag te boek als moeilijke mensen die voor een hoop overlast kunnen zorgen, niet alleen in de maatschappij maar ook in de behandelsetting. Hun prognose wordt steevast als ongunstig aangemerkt, ook al suggereert recent onderzoek dat dit niet terecht is. Een belangrijke discussie gaat over de vraag wat realistische behandeldoelen zijn. Kunnen patiënten genezen van hun persoonlijkheidsstoornis, zoals wordt gesteld door sommige psychotherapeuten die zich in de (langdurige en intensieve) behandeling hebben gespecialiseerd? Of is deze ambitie te hoog gegrepen en mogen we blij zijn als we patiënten met persoonlijkheidsstoornissen kunnen leren om op een betere (lees: meer adaptieve) manier om te gaan met hun eigenaardigheden? Om een standpunt in dit debat te kunnen bepalen, wordt stilgestaan bij de wortels van het debat alsook bij recente onderzoeksbevindingen.
