Abstract
In onze samenleving is de aandacht voor het voorkomen van crimineel gedrag in de afgelopen vijftig jaar sterk gestegen. Vooral uitingen van zinloos geweld op straat trekken terecht veel aandacht en zorgen voor maatschappelijke onrust. Maar ook allerlei kleinere vormen van criminaliteit, zoals winkeldiefstallen, fietsendiefstallen, rellen van voetbalsupporters en openbare vernielingen, kunnen slachtoffers en burgers diep raken en gevoelens van onveiligheid oproepen. Vanzelfsprekend stimuleren de stijgende criminaliteitcijfers het denken over en het onderzoek naar de oorzaken van crimineel gedrag. In dit kader wordt vaak gewezen op de rol van psychiatrische aandoeningen, en in bijzonder de aandachtstekort-/hyperactiviteitsstoornis (adhd). De bbc-documentaire Mind to Crime kreeg enkele jaren geleden veel aandacht op de Nederlandse televisie. Kinderen met adhd werden hierin zonder blikken of blozen geportretteerd als kleine gevoelloze monsters en criminelen in de dop. Het doel van deze bijdrage is om feiten en misverstanden over de relatie tussen adhd en criminaliteit op een rij te zetten.
