Behandeling van jeugdigen met een psychiatrische stoornis en een verstandelijke beperking

Abstract

Generally speaking, many factors determine psychopathology among young people with mental retardation: numerous different circumstances may give rise to behavioural problems and psychiatric disorders. This implies that diagnostics and treatment are always multidisciplinary in nature, whereby biological factors, individual educational history, cognitive and social-emotional level, and external environmental influences play a significant role. Following a brief discussion of the specific characteristics that play a role in diagnostics and the treatment of young people with mental retardation, this article presents a summary of the main scientific insights into the various medicinal and non medicinal forms of treatment. Existing treatment options are examined, as are those treatment options for which there is now scientific evidence.

Samenvatting

Psychopathologie bij mensen met een verstandelijke beperking is in veel gevallen multicausaal bepaald: verschillende factoren kunnen bijdragen tot het ontstaan van gedragsproblemen en psychiatrische stoornissen. Dit impliceert dat de diagnostiek en behandeling altijd een multidisciplinair karakter hebben, waarbij biologische factoren, individuele leergeschiedenis, cognitief en sociaal-emotioneel niveau, en invloeden vanuit het milieu een belangrijke plaats innemen. In deze bijdrage wordt, na een korte toelichting van de specifieke kenmerken die een rol spelen bij de diagnostiek en behandeling van jeugdigen met een verstandelijke beperking, de belangrijkste wetenschappelijke inzichten over de verschillende medicamenteuze en non-medicamenteuze behandelvormen samengevat. Hierbij zullen we zowel de bestaande behandelpraktijk inventariseren, alsook stilstaan bij die behandelvormen waarvoor inmiddels wetenschappelijke evidentie bestaat.
