The character “hairless” in the mouse

Summary

“Hairless” is a recessive character inMus musculus. The cutaneous structures are abnormal, the cutis thickened, the mammary glands rudimentary, the nails grotesquely curved. The hairless female is unattractive to the normal haired male. When first the hairless mouse appeared it was delicate and commonly sterile. Now the stock presents unremarkable general physiological efficiency (save in respect of lactation). An explanation of this fact is attempted. The results of skin transplantation seem to indicate that there is no specific or general endocrinal insufficiency. The skin, for genetic reasons, cannot respond to the hair growth promoting agencies.
