Summary

Throat swab examination for the study of diphtheria carriers among 1039 school children from Poona was done in September and October 1969. Twenty-six children (2.5 per cent) harbouredC. diphtheriae, while 6 harboured diphtheroids. The carrier rate showed a generalised rising trend with increase in age from 5–6 years to 11–12 years. The carrier rate was not influenced by sex, and it was significantly higher in children from schools situated in densely populated areas.

Out of 26 carriers ofC. diphtheriae the mitis type was isolated in 21 (2.02 per cent) while the gravis type was found in 5 (0.48 per cent). All gravis diphtheria bacilli were virulent. Thus the virulent carrier rates among the school children in September and October, 1969 were 0.48 per cent and 2.0 per cent respectively.
