Summary
Stool specimens of 500 children from Srinagar and surrounding villages were examined for detection ofGiardia lamblia. The age group ranged from 1 to 10 years. A detailed history and physical examination were conducted. Total incidence of giardia infestation was found to be 9.20%, giardiasis alone being 6.60% and giardiasis with ascariasis being 2.60%. The maximum incidence was found in the age group of 3 to 4 years, where out of 130 total cases, 24 had giardiasis (18.46%). Infestation was found to be slightly higher in urban areas by 1.35% than in rural areas. Diarrhoea was a common symptom (56.52%). Similarly, pain in the abdomen was also a common presentation (60.73%). Infestation was more in cases with poor hygiene and poor social set up.
