Summaries
New technologies and the necessity to supply suitable materials for these technologies have inspired a growing interest in novel inorganic-organic hybrid materials with the aim of combining the inherent properties of inorganic materials with those of organic polymers. In this paper, three different ways of synthesing hybrid materials by the sol-gel route are described.
The classical approach comprises the formation of an inorganic network by hydrolysis and the condensation of monomer organo alkoxy compounds with the subsequent cross-linking of incorporated reactive groups (eg by UV-induced polymerisation). For the second method, an organic polymer (eg polyaniline) is formed with silylated aniline monomers in order to connect the polymer to an inorganic backbone by simultaneous polymerisation and sol-gel processing. Finally, the modification of organic polymers (such as polyvinylbutyral or styrene-allyl alcohol copolymers) with suitable organo alkoxy silanes is described which aims to create an inorganic-organic hybrid material by subsequent sol-gel processing.
