Abstract
The volume expansion due to low concentrations of dissolved hydrogen in nickel has been measured by observing the length change during isothermal desorption of precharged samples. The present measurements indicate a much smaller expansion than found previously in cathodically charged nickel. The lattice relaxation per hydrogen atom was measured to be 0.13 ± 0.03 atomic volumes, compared to 0.28 at. vol from the single previous determination. Measurements were also made of the hydrogen induced volume expansion in niobium to verify the experimental technique. Good agreement with literature values was found in this metal.
