Leakage study of the west side of the oymapinar reservoir, turkey

Summary

Between 1963 and 1976 very detailed surface and subsurface investigations have been made to solve the complex geological and geotechnical problems of the Oymapinar project which is located on the Manavgat River in the southern part of Turkey.

The problem of leakage from the west side of the reservoir is one of the most interesting engineering geological problems of the probject. Investigations have included core borings for a total length of 17 000 m, geophysical investigations, and regional and local dye tests in order to clarify the complex leakage problem, confirm the accuracy of the surface data and the watertightness of the western rim of the reservoir. As a result, the Tilkiler reservoir grout curtain which is a doubtful project from the technical and economic feasibility point of view, has been abandoned. This effects an economy of a few hundred million Turkish liras to the project.

Résumé

Entre 1963 et 1976, des recherches superficielles et souterraines très détaillées ont été faites pour résoudre les problèmes complexes géologique et géotechniques de l’ouvrage d’Oymapinar situé sur la rivière de Manavgat dans le sud de la Turquie. Le problème de la fuite du côté occidental du réservoir est un des plus intéressants parmi les autres problèmes géotechniques que pose le barrage. Les sondages carottés totalisent 17 000 mètres de long, les investigations géophysiques, les éxpériences faites avec des colorants à l’échelle régionale et locale qui ont été faits pour clarifier les problèmes complexes de la fuite confirment l’exactitude des données du terrain et l’étanchéité du côté occidental du réservoir. D’après cet résultat, le voile du réservoir de Tilkiler qui est un projet problématique au point de vue technique et économique a été a bandonné. Il en résulte une économie de quelques millions de livres turques pour le projet.
