Problems in the determination of freshwater dinoflagellates (Dinophyceae)

Abstract

According to the most recent findings mainly from the life cycles and multiplication of dinoflagellates it is shown that using only the external morphology is not sufficient for the determination of many species nor for the key. Dinoflagellates are characterized by many transient features between protozoa and algae and they cannot be introduced without difficulties.

Zusammenfassung

Nach neuesten Erfahrungen anhand von Studien der Lebenszyklen und der Vermehrungsphasen der Dinoflagellaten wird nachgewiesen, dass die Anwendung externer Morphologie allein zur Bestimmung vieler Arten nicht ausreicht und auch keinen Schlüssel zulässt. Die Dinoflagellaten zeichnen sich durch viele zeitweilige Merkmale von Protozoen aus, und man kann sie nur mit Schwierigkeiten in das Algensystem bzw. bei den Protozoen einreihen. Wir schlagen daher vor, sie vorläufig zu den Schleimpilzen in die Klasse Mycetozoa (Myxomycetes) einzureihen.

Résumé

Partant des données les plus récentes relatives surtout au cycle vital et à la reproduction des dinoflagellés, on démontre que la morphologie externe, seule, est insuffisante aussi bien pour classer certaines espèces que pour la clef. Les dinoflagellés se distinguent par plusieurs caractères intermédiaires entre les protozoaires et les algues: ils ne peuvent être classés sans difficultés ni comme algues ni comme protozoaires; il est proposé de les ranger provisoirement parmi les Myxomycètes (classe Mycetozoa, Myxomycetes).
