The SO₂ pollution in Madrid

Summary

In this first part of the work, SO₂ pollution data in Madrid will be examined in the years from 1978 to 1981. The measures are given by a network of sixteen stations spread all over the city. Attention will be focused on a classification of the different meteorological patterns corresponding to different pollution conditions, on the basis of the synoptic maps over the Iberian Peninsula given by the Instituto Nacional de Meteorología. So, the meteorological conditions leading to pollution stagnation over the city with dangerous effects on the health of people will be pointed out. Finally, a statistical analysis of measured SO₂ concentrations will allow us to detect an annual cycle with critical values only during the period from November to March, when the domestic heating is fully working.

Riassunto

In questa prima parte del lavoro sono presi in esame i dati d'inquinamento da SO₂ a Madrid, misurati dal 1978 al 1981 in 16 stazioni distribuite nella città. Particolare attenzione è rivolta ad una classificazione delle situazioni meteorologiche corrispondenti a diversi livelli d'inquinamento sulla base delle mappe sinottiche fornite dall'Instituto Nacional de Meteorología. Sono cosí messe in evidenza le condizioni che portano alla stagnazione dell'inquinamento sulla città con conseguenze pericolose per gli abitanti. Infine, un'analisi statistica delle concentrazioni di SO₂ misurate mette in evidenza l'esistenza di un ciclo annuale con valori critici solo nel periodo corrispondente al funzionamento del riscaldamento domestico (da Novembre a Marzo).

В первой части работы исследуются данные по SO₂ загрязнению в Мадриде, которые были получены в период с 1978 г. по 1981 г. Исследования были проведены сетью из шестнаддати станций, распределенных по всему городу. Особое внимание уделяется классификации различных метеорологических ситуаций, соответствующих различным усповиям загрязнения, на основе синоптических карт, представленных Национальным Институтом Метеорологии. Отмечаются метеорологические условия, приводящие к застаиванию загрязнения над городом, с последующими опасными явлениями для здоровья людей. Статистический анализ измеренных SO₂ концентраций позволяет определить годовой цикл с критическими значениями в период с ноября по март, когда функционирует отопление помещений.
