Summary
The determination of trace elements by solid sampling in geological samples presents many difficulties because the matrix is complex. We studied atomization and thermal decomposition conditions for solid sampling on soil, rock and sediment samples, using inverse Zeeman background correction. Each sample was ‘diluted’ with graphite powder. Both the sensitivity and accuracy were improved with the graphite dilutions.
For samples belonging to the same rock family, a relation between concentrations and absorbances is achieved. But this relation is poor when different rock samples are correlated, thus showing a matrix effect. Various matrix modifiers are tested to compensate this effect. Our results are compared to certified values.
