Summary

The author gives a general account of the parasites and predators ofThaumetopoea pityocampa already known.

From a personnal inquiry in 31 localities in France he obtained 4 egg-parasites, 8 larval and nymphal parasites, 2 secondary parasites and 3 predators.

The principal features of the biology of the most important species are given and the ability of each of them as a biological control agent is discussed.

In his conclusions, the author states that:

  • - Detailed and complete list of entomophagous enemies ofT. pityocampa is not closed.

  • - Our knowledge on the biology of the main parasite species is incomplete.

  • - Biological control measures based on the use of indigenous natural enemies are not to be limited to a mere protection of such species but must tend to ensure a better time-coincidence between host and parasite.

  • - Introduction of entomophagous insects may prove possible and useful after a thorough survey of the natural enemies of other forest defoliators in different parts of the world; this survey must not be limited to species exhibiting close taxonomical relations withT. pityocampa.
