Summary

The effect of growth regulators on tuberisation of potato (var.British Queen) stem cuttings has been investigated. It was found that indoleacetic acid and maleic hydrazide promoted tuberisation while gibberellic acid strongly inhibited the formation of tubers. The behaviour of stem pieces on a low sugar medium was also investigated and it was found that the application of growth regulators did not cause tuberisation when an adequate supply of carbohydrate was not available. It is suggested that tuberisation is regulated by the interplay of carbohydrate supply, gibberellins and antigibberellin-like substances.
