Summary

A considerable body of knowledge on the physicochemical relationships between thin films and hard surfaces which has been amassed in other fields can assist our understanding of film stability and column durability in open tubular glass capillary columns. Reasons for the high success ratio of untreated glass columns coated by the heated-inlet-tube modification of the Golay coating technique are discussed.
