Summary
The high standard which radiotelemetry has achieved in the past decades has opened up completely new dimensions for game biology. The paper describes the basic principles of more simple telemetry systems as they are frequently applied to field studies. Some German and American products are listed. Over and above this, there is discussion of problems which can arise in connection with choice of frequency, energy supply, the attachment of transmitters to the animals and transmitter weight. Finally, there is a brief summary of the basic importance of telemetry for research and its wide range of application. The emphasis is on field studies in the sphere of physiology and ecology, the intention being to provide certain basic information to anyone interested in methods of radiotelemetry.
